The Mat-Su Animal Shelter hosts dogs, cats and an array of other small animals at a facility located next to the borough landfill near Palmer. The shelter took in 3,486 animals last year and euthanized just over 21%, officials said. During your visit, an adoption counselor will assist you through the adoption process and introduce you to as many dogs and/or cats as you would like to meet, in order to make the best possible match for you, your family and your new pet. All dogs are microchipped, neutered, current on all vaccines, heartworm tested (if age appropriate), and up-to-date on preventatives at the time of adoption. Shelter officials have said for years they need more room to handle the growing numbers of cats and dogs going to the shelter with the parish's rising human population, and also have space to isolate sick animals and handle other needs.

The parish has agreed to spend $735,000 for about half of the 13.6-acre property. By comparison, Anchorage animal control rules allow anyone who finds an animal to keep it “while continuing to search for the owner” though they are also encouraged to contact the shelter if the owner can’t be located right away. Animals can also be brought to the shelter during business hours, or placed in an after-hours drop area.

But now some rescue officials worry that animals entering the shelter sick or injured won’t receive immediate care and may instead be euthanized. Matanuska-Susitna Borough shelter officials said this week that they decided to enforce the longstanding law so they can more easily reunite lost animals with their owners as well as prosecute those who may be guilty of animal care crimes. Dogs are kept on heartworm preventative & all animals receive flea and tick preventatives monthly by Animal House. Most kittens/puppies need to continue in foster care until they have been altered, vaccinated and ready for adoption. This typically takes 4-6 weeks with frequent appointments at the shelter and our local vet clinic. The shelter currently works with 16 rescue groups to place dogs and cats in the community. Adoption fees charged by rescues are set by each organization and can vary widely, with prices ranging into the hundreds. The borough does not charge a fee to rescues who take animals.

One thing I liked about sailing with Viking is how leisurely the day to day pace is. I’ll admit I didn’t know too much about the country outside of Amsterdam and our guide was quite helpful to explain the history of the nation and the purpose of its many windmills. The castle was once home to the prince-archbishops of Cologne and is decked out in gold, marble and all-around extravagance. I particularly liked the massive entryway staircase which was gilded and made my mouth drop open when we turned the corner. We explored Marksburg Castle and wandered a bit on our own after. By afternoon, we reached Koblenz, a city set at the mouth of two rivers.

As internet junkies, it was a bit stressful to have spotty internet during our Viking Rhine getaway. Food is plentiful and cooked to order, and the German beer onboard is some of the best in the world.

Frankly, being on a spiral staircase for that long with only the occasional narrow gothic window was disorienting and dizzying. If you want to climb a church tower, I suggest going up to the top of the Notre-Dame in Strasbourg instead. As you leave Rüdesheim, the Rhine River goes from picturesque to spectacular. This day of voyaging through the Rhine Valley is the centerpiece of the entire trip.

My favorite part of our floor was the coffee & espresso bar to grab pastries and java any time of day. I helped myself to endless madeleines and double dark chocolate muffins. The ships are well designed to really maximize space and cabins feature a giant closet and tons of drawers to put away your clothes, should you wish to fully unpack. It’s one thing to go to an event and have to drive home fully intoxicated and exhausted. But when the drive is a walk- let’s just say I felt like I hit the jackpot. As someone who dabbles in event production from time to time, witnessing the series of events and artist/dj line ups justified the cost for me. While there were a few areas or items I would do differently, I was mainly satisfied with the product I received and the memories I was able to create.

This year, I rewore my costume from St. Lucia Carnival. J’ouvert is like a happiness elixir, as well as the most exhausting feat. This may have been one of my favorite, if not the best, j’ouverts I have experienced. It’s not the same as chipping behind a truck but the energy of the sea of people was remarkable. Unfortunately, the event was moved indoors to the Promenade, which naturally led to a spillover into the Star Lounge. I had a good time, but was feeling a bit stifled in my outfit in the close quarters.

Then I was determined to go to UberSoca on Ice so we changed and headed there for the last 30 minutes of the event and I had so much funnnnnnnn – even fell twice (but oh well). After that, definitely took a break and skipped the Theater Turn Up because 1. I wasn’t sold on the whole GOT theme and I didn’t have a ticket. Changed clothes for Game of Thrones Night at 12am and after headed to Small Island Turn Up. It’s humbling to see Soca music (which is scarcely recognized as its own genre), manifest its unrivalled energy and become the biggest theme cruise in the world, bigger than EDM, Reggae, Hip-Hop.

The 2018 UberSoca Cruise Review – To Go Or Not To Go?

The bouncing and jumping up was on another level and it was real RUKSHUN in the place. I was feeling ill due to seasickness, so I was not fully enjoying myself much. After about an hour, I was ready to go back to my room and change. I would have just slept the rest of the evening, but FOMO on the ship is real. You don’t want to be the person hearing about events that took place while you were next door.

In 2019, they sold out both sailings in just 10 days. Over 7,000 people from countries including Australia, Kuwait, Poland, France, Sweden, Japan, UK, USA, and the Caribbean— took part in this carefully curated and well-executed Caribbean experience. After taking a few cruises with his family, Nathaniel Turner realized that the programming on cruise ships didn’t necessarily cater to him, or Caribbean culture. Instead, he thought it would be pretty cool to create an experience for Caribbean culture in a cruise format. This year however,  a destination I’ve never been to came up, so I decided to suck it up and try. After all, I’m always down to try something new at least once.

This was the second pool party on our last full day on the ship. This was my reasoning behind how I ended up in the jacuzzi pelting my worries away. I changed, took some Dramamine and soldiered back out to join the party. It was a nice time and I could tell people were trying to forget the sway of the ship and make the most of it, but my stomach could not. I ended up calling it a night “early” (maybe 4am ish). If you think this experience is only about partying into the wee hours of the night, you are mistaken.

J’ouvert had so much going on all at once between the stage, a riddim section in the back and basically you were able to “cool down” on the beach if you chose to. The only issues I had with J’ouvert is that I wish it was a moving jouvert with trucks instead of a concert but I can only imagine the lengths the UberSoca Cruise team would have to go to to make that happen. Fast forward 4 years later, USC has gone from the smallest cruise ship charter to being the biggest, hypest and best cruise ship charter on the Ocean.

If it wasn’t for Kevin Crown bringing the jab jab vibes, I would have been annoyed. He switched things over and saved the night in my opinion. I was particularly excited about this after-party on Night 1 because Grenada soca was really great this year (and every year, if we are honest) so I was glad the organizers decided to pay particular focus on it.
